Five tricks that will help you lose weight while still being a foodie

Mixed NutsI’m a foodie. Food lover. Food experimenter and cook. Food grower. So I’m not talking about tricks like eating 10 grapefruit per day or living on only avocados, although both of those are part of a foodie arsenal. Here are five easy, implement-today additions to your life that will absolutely help you shed pounds. How do I know? Worked for me. It can for you too.

Sneaky Food Trick #1: Eat every 3 – 3 1/2 hours. Often, we overindulge in our favorites foods because we’re starved by the time our next meal arrives (donuts in the break room, anyone?). Avoid this hazardous path by eating every three hours. Small snacks in between the big ones will help keep your metabolism and blood sugar even and humming along nicely. Nuts, raw vegetables, whole wheat crackers or fruit are some snacking options that are easy to carry and work into your day.

Sneaky Food Trick #2: If you’re going to drink your calories (wine, beer, spirits — and this counts for soda as well), make sure you count those into your daily intake and adjust accordingly. All of these beverages contain sugar (or turn into sugar/glucose in the body), so avoid sugar or refined carbohydrates (pasta, rice, bread) in and with your food when drinking.

Sneaky Food Trick #3: When eating out, order a salad or broth-based soup before dinner. You’ll fill up and can take half of your entree home with you (or remove the temptation by asking your server to box up half when it arrives). Better yet, order an appetizer with the salad or soup instead of a main course and you won’t be tempted to eat the whole dinner portion.

Sneaky Food Trick #4: Eat most of your food before 8 p.m. at night, concentrating on a good breakfast (not just coffee!). Skimping on breakfast will cause your blood sugar to crash before lunch and that meatball sandwich on white bread will be what you crave.  And snacking after 8 p.m. doesn’t allow your body enough time to burn big amounts of food before going to sleep.

Sneaky Food Trick #5: Late night snacker? Brush your teeth after dinner. With a clean mouth, you might be less tempted to soil your sparking teeth. Jedi mind tricks often work magic.
