Wine review: Los Alamos 2009 Malbec Mendoza

Los Alamos MalbecA darling of the critics for a few years now, this Los Alamos Malbec from Argentina’s Mendoza region has one great thing going for it: It costs under $12, sometimes even under $10. It’s a bit astringent and young but it offers everything you’d want in a friendly, everyday drinking malbec. Medium-bodied and bright with robust black cherry, blackberry and vanilla oak. Has some leathery tannins that will soften slightly if you let it sit in your glass a bit.

I was really impressed with this wine. It is wonderful and it was less than $10.00. Unbelieveable! Thank you for the great tip!

You are pushing the Malbec out too soon. It is very nice wine but very young (2011). It takes at least an hour in a decanter to become drinkable which is too long for restaurant use. I believe you need to hold it for 3 years before releasing it or you may sour peoples’ taste for it. It is just too rough without a lot of breathing.
