Parducci 2008 Pinot Grigio California + Humboldt Fog

(Last Updated On: 06/22/2010)

parducci pinot grigioPinot grigio might be a bit “pedestrian” for wine snobs out there, basically because of the liters of cheap crap from Italy. This fruity yet tart, organically-farmed number from California might turn heads. Parducci was organic before organic was cool and I must admit I wasn’t a huge fan of them before. But this wine, and their 2006 Sustainable Red, changed my mind. It’s rich, smooth and creamy with a crisp finish. Soft apricot, peach, followed by lime and wet slate. Great value at around $13. Sweetness=2 (out of 10). 4.5 stars (out of 5).

Recommended pairing from Raymond Hook, cheese consultant:

Pair this cheese with one of the best goat milk producers in California: Humboldt Fog from Cypress Grove Chevre

humboldt fog cheeseA perfect match, with its own subtle hints of sweetness and nice minerality — a great all around cheese for wine! It’s hand made and layered with a wave of ash. The richness of the soft ripening goat cheese and the acidity of the wine create a creamy mouthfeel, without either overpowering the other. Try this combo with a really ripe pear and warm fresh bread if possible.

  • I wish this country embraced cheese like the French. I would love to go to a wine bar (or restaurant) and have a “chariot of cheese” available with recommended pairings. To me, this would be heaven!
