Chilly evenings suck without wine. And über cold nights require something warm and yummy, good enough to snuggle up in a Snuggie with. Mulled wine is my go-to drink. Alternately called “Wassail”, “Hot Wine” and “Glühwein”, mulled wine has been enjoyed on winter ‘eves for thousands of years, reportedly invented in Germany.
I’ve been making this stuff for years but, being one of “those” cooks, never measured anything I put in it. A few nights ago, I actually did and created my recipe for mulled wine.
Red Mulled Wine (aka “Wassail”)
1 bottle dry yet fruity red wine (I used TempraTantrum Tempranillo/Cabernet ($10) – gushing cherry and easy tannins)
1 cup fresh orange juice
1 orange or tangerine, thickly sliced (1/4 inch with rind)
1/4 cup sugar
juice of 1 lemon
5 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1. Add all ingredients to a medium-sized saucepan.
2. Bring to almost boil. DO NOT BOIL… you’ll lose the alcohol and all the fun.
3. Simmer 15 minutes but if you continue to simmer, it’ll get better. Great in a crock pot.
Thank you for this recipe. This is the first time since living in FL that I’ve felt that I could actually MAKE mulled wine and not feel slightly ridiculous. Goes w/o saying, but I love the site.
I have been looking for a good mulled wine recipe to compliment the holiday festivities!
